At the time, it was a rockstar. Intel Q6600 G0 stepping, 4GB RAM, nVidia 8800GTX 768Mb Video card, Dual DVD Burners, Dual 22" Widescreen monitors, 2x250GB SATA drives in a pretty Lian Li case.</p> <p>After nearly 2 years, I can still say I am extremely happy with it. It is still quite fast (for all intents and purposes, despite needing a re-install), and still does everything I need it to do. True, its not the fastest, most chocolaty system on the planet anymore, but it works.</p> <p>At the time, everything, including monitors, UPS, etc. was $2200 shipped to my door. A little investigation indicates that today I could build a really nice i7 machine with dual 1TB SATA2 drives, dual burners, a MUCH better video card, 12GB of RAM, etc al. for about $1800 (minus the monitors). Its RAID5, so I really only get 2TB. I did this because the Areca card will support all 8 bays when I fill the system up, and it will take some time to encode all my movies. I started crunching some numbers and ran several different configurations, and I have come up with a setup that is slightly more desirable for a few reasons.</p> <p>For a little background, the originally planned system was a 1U server with a 12 port multilane 3Ware raid controller, external multilane cables, connected to a 3U JBOD array with 12 Seagate Barracuda 500G ES.2 SATA drives.</p> <p>My biggest problem with this setup, is that it could not be easily expanded in the future, since the 1U server only had space for a single controller card. Additionally, the 1U server I planned was a bargain basement variety from eBay.</p> <p>May I digress.. I redesigned the array, and have come up with a cleaner solution.<br /> By switching from 12 500G drives to 8 750G drives, I maintain almost identical overall storage capabilities, however by doing this, I can fit the whole works in a single 3U case. The system I plan on using for this is a SuperMicro case and motherboard, which you could acquire from a variety of sources, but I prefer <a href="http://www.siliconmechanics.com/i5746/3u-dual-core-xeon-server.php">Silicon Mechanics</a> since they will build the entire system with cpus and raid controllers for a reasonable price, and their warranty is very good.</p> <p>So the new setup is as follows:</p> <li><a href="http://www.siliconmechanics.com/i5746/3u-dual-core-xeon-server.php">SMI Rackform iServ R272</a> - $2664 List Price</li> <ul> <li>(1) Intel Xeon E5405 Quad-Core 2.0GHz 12MB Cache</li> <li>2GB (2 x 1GB) 667MHz fully buffered DIMM</li> <li>3Ware 9650SE-8LPML PCIe x4 8-Port SATA II Multilane RAID controller w/ 256Mb cache &#38; BBU</li> <li>(1) 750GB Seagate Barracuda ES.2 HDD</li> <li>Low-Profile 8x DVD CD-RW</li> <li>Fixed 550W - PFC - Auto Switching 100-240V PSU</li> </ul> <li>(8) <a href="http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sata_hard_drives/">750GB Seagate Barracuda ES.2 HDD</a> - $1472 ($184ea)</li> <p>The reason I listed the 8 HDD seperately, was because Silicon Mechanics didn't seem to be very comparable on the price. The 1 I configured in the SMI system is because they have no way to remove it from the configuration. I figured I would use it as the cold spare for the other 8, or as an OS drive for the server.</p> <p>Also, I changed the system from dual Quad core CPUs to a single one. This is because I found a product I prefer to use instead of Windows 2008. If you want this to be a dedicated iSCSI server, I recommend the following instead of maintaining windows.</p> <p>In regards to OS, I was planning on using Windows 2008 server, which has the iSCSI target abilities, however I found a more attractive product that requires less maintenance. The product is called the <a href="http://www.open-e.com/iscsi_r3/storage_area_network/?lang=en&#38;product_code=iSCSI-R3&#38;show=description">Open-E ISCSI-R3 Enterprise</a>. It is a bootable USB bootstrap module which has all the necessary stuff to run an iSCSI target. Plug it onto your internal USB, boot from it, setup targets and voila! Instant iSCSI. This product is around $650, about the same as one would expect to pay for a legal copy of Windows. I have to consider this, since this whole thing is somewhat expiremental, which means I can legitimately use my MSDN copy.</p> <p>Now, with this newly designed setup, I end up with just over 5TB of RAID5 protected storage for just over $4500. Additionally, if I need to expand later, I can simply add a 3Ware 12port, 16port, or 24port RAID controller in one of the 2 PCIe x8 slots (the 8port 3Ware uses the x4 port) and attach it to an external JBOD. I could do this 2 times (so theoretically, I could add 2 24port cards and 48 1TB drives... but really, this is for my house. (although I might be able to find a use for 40TB of space)</p> <p>My current media collection is about 800 titles, in 720p (havent gotten into the 1080p digital content yet).
